How to Publish a Name Change Advertisement in India

Changing your name officially in India follows a well-established three-stage process. Skipping or reordering the stages is the most common reason applications get rejected.

Stage one: the affidavit

Prepare an affidavit on stamp paper declaring your old name, your new name, your address and your reason for the change. This must be sworn before a notary or oath commissioner. The reason can be as ordinary as personal preference — it does not need to be exceptional.

Stage two: newspaper publication

Publish a declaration in a newspaper. Most authorities require two publications: one in an English daily and one in a regional language daily circulating in your area. The advertisement text is short and follows a standard form naming your old name, new name and address.

Keep the original newspaper copy. Authorities routinely ask for the physical clipping, not a photograph of it.

Stage three: gazette notification

Submit your affidavit, the newspaper clippings and your identity documents to the Department of Publication for gazette notification. This stage is handled entirely by the government press and takes considerably longer than the first two.

• Address proof
• Marriage certificate, if the change follows marriage
• Passport-size photographs

Common mistakes

The most frequent error is publishing in a newspaper that does not circulate in the applicant's jurisdiction. The second is a mismatch between the spelling in the affidavit and the spelling in the advertisement — even a single character difference can cause rejection. Proofread the advertisement text against the affidavit before approving it.
