Matrimonial Advertisement Format and Examples

How to structure a matrimonial advertisement that reads well, respects the word limit, and attracts genuine responses.

OA

Onward Advertising

A matrimonial advertisement has to convey a great deal in very few words. The convention that has evolved in Indian newspapers is compact and highly readable once you know its structure.

The standard structure

Most matrimonial advertisements follow the same order: community, then the candidate's details, then family background, then what the family is seeking, then contact information.

What to include

  • Age and height
  • Education and profession
  • Caste, sub-caste and gotra, where relevant to the family
  • City of residence and work
  • Brief family background
  • Partner expectations
  • A contact number or email

Keeping within the word limit

Classified advertisements are charged per word, so conventional abbreviations are widely used and universally understood by readers of these columns. Writing "B.Tech" rather than "Bachelor of Technology" is standard practice, not a shortcut.

Avoid subjective description. Phrases like "very beautiful" or "well settled" consume words without conveying information a reader can act on, and families scanning dozens of advertisements skip over them.

Protecting privacy

Publish a mobile number or email rather than a full postal address. Some families prefer a box-number arrangement where the newspaper forwards responses, which keeps contact details entirely private until the family chooses to share them.

Timing

Sunday editions carry the largest matrimonial sections and the highest readership for this category. If your budget allows only one insertion, make it a Sunday.
